Homelessness & Hospitality: A Conversation

John Vaught, from Room in the Inn, will be our guest speaker Sunday afternoon Oct. 29 from 2-3:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. You can be part of the conversation as we explore the ministries of Room in the Inn and discuss how to share hospitality in richer ways with our guests who are homeless. Mr. Vaught is the manager of the education and workforce development programs at RITI and he oversaw the weekly young adult shelter last season. This will be a strong way to prepare for our upcoming Room in the Inn season! See the lobby bulletin board for available volunteer opportunities.

Treat ’Em Right

The annual TNT Club Halloween Party is today! Be a volunteer by arriving a little before 2 p.m. to welcome ghosts, goblins, princesses, frogs, fairies and all kinds of nice folks to Fellowship Hall. It would be particularly helpful if you can help cleanup and pack-up from 3:30-4 p.m. TNT is an all-ages ministry event for adults with developmental disabilities and the Vine Street community.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Vine Street, we’re going to tailgate together and watch Vanderbilt take on Western Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 4! The cost for the tailgate experience and game ticket is $10 per person; $30 max per household. Please make plans to bring a snack or dessert to share. Game time to be determined closer to game day. Please RSVP to Jeff Miller (jeff.miller@img.com). The more the merrier—hope you can join us!

What About Mickey and Mary?

To bring Mary Poppins to the screen, Walt Disney needed to work his magic. That’s what’s behind Saving Mr. Banks (PG-13), the feature title of the next Vine Street at the Movies! Join host Jim Carls on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Bride’s Room. The film is a somewhat fictionalized story of Walt Disney’s relationship with the notoriously hardheaded author P.L. Travers as Disney tried to gain the right to film Mary Poppins. You’ll be surprised by how the story goes to unexpected dramatic places. As always, this is a free event, so bring your friends!

95 Matters to Discuss

With the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation about a week away, the adult Christian education class is exploring Glenn Sunshine’s book, The Reformation for Armchair Theologians. Are we “reformed and always reforming”? Where has unity been achieved? Does it matter to Disciples of Christ of the Stone-Campbell tradition? Come find out! Everyone gathers at 9 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Youth Update: TNT Halloween Event

Partying with our friends from the TNT Club is always a good time. The get-together this afternoon takes lots of volunteers to help with the crafts, costumes, snacks and of course--trick or treating! Arrive at 1:30 p.m. in costume or festive Halloween clothing. Thinking of bringing a friend? This is a terrific event to introduce someone to the TNT Club. What’s up next week? John Vaught from Room in the Inn will discuss Homelessness and Hospitality. (See the bulletin cover announcement.)

Feeding Body, Mind, Spirit

Today we celebrate our ministry partnership with Luke 14:12! First, remember our monthly commitment to serve with this not-so-typical downtown soup kitchen is tomorrow, Oct. 23 from 11:15 a.m.- 1 p.m. on the Room in the Inn campus. Contact Jeff Miller to volunteer (jeff.miller@img.com). Next, we welcome in worship the Rev. Amy Dodson-Watts, executive director of Luke 14:12, for a special presentation! Thank YOU for all the ways you strengthen this life-giving partnership.
