Mousehunt, women's suffrage, and cakes!

Vine Street at the Movies is a group that meets once a month to watch a movie together. The February feature, showtime is February 5 at 7pm, is Mousehunt (1997): Two stumblebum inheritors are determined to rid their antique house of a mouse who is equally determined to stay where he is. It’s like Home Alone with a mouse! Jim Carls coordinates the group and curates the playlist.

Tech suggestions

Do you have ideas of how Vine Street can better use communication technology in our building? Have you seen other churches or organizations creatively display information and media on-site?

As we prepare to undergo improvements to our facility, we want to also improve how technology can help us communicate and grow our ministry both within the walls of our building and out in the community. For example:

  • replacing a standard bulletin board with a dynamic flat-screen display;

  • providing Smart TVs to classrooms and small-group meetings that are connected to the Internet and easily accessible;

  • offering weekly bulletins in digital form online to reduce the amount of paper to be printed and recycled.

The Administrative Council wants to hear your creative ideas, both BIG and small. Email your suggestions to media@vinestreet.org and we'll take up these ideas in an upcoming spring meeting.

Thank you for helping us find creative ways to expand God's table and invite others to come and see!

Learning together

Long-time fans and first-timers alike have an opportunity to learn with one of the great (and very entertaining) teachers of our time, Dr. A.J. Levine on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm at the Temple. The mini series continues:

February 4
A (very) Jewish way of interpreting the Bible ... “You have heard it said, ‘An eye for an eye’”

February 11
A (very) Jewish way of living ... “Blessed are the meek”

Monday Men

Several guys meet for a beer on the first Monday of each month. If you’re free and don’t have to stay home with a box of tissues, come and join them on Monday, February 3, at 6pm, at M.L. Rose on Charlotte.

Susan B. Anthony, the Constitution, and Vine Street

Susan B. Anthony (February 15, 1820 – March 13, 1906) was an American social reformer and women's rights activist who played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement. Born into a Quaker family committed to social equality, she collected anti-slavery petitions at the age of 17. In 1856, she became the New York state agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society.

In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester, New York, and convicted in a widely publicized trial. Although she refused to pay the fine, the authorities declined to take further action. In 1878, Anthony and fellow activist Stanton arranged for Congress to be presented with an amendment giving women the right to vote. Introduced by Sen. Aaron A. Sargent (R-CA), it later became known colloquially as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. It was ratified as the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920.

And you know what else happened that year? Vine Street Christian Church celebrated its 100th anniversary! So 2020 is a pretty big year for us, and you’ll read and hear a lot more about that anniversary in the weeks and months ahead!
