The Vine Weekly: May 13, 2018

Cheering on those who gave us life and nurtured us all our days... happy Mother's Day! Hey, how about making it Mother's Month and bringing mom to some of these fantastic events?

Next Week: Pentecost Brunch

Celebrate the life of the church on Pentecost Sunday, May 20! We’ll gather for a festive worship experience at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary, then enjoy brunch together in Fellowship Hall. How about wearing red that day, too, a sign of God’s spirit among us and of our love for God (Acts 2: 1-21). Is our understanding of the Holy Spirit too small, too antiquated, too boxed-in, to be as useful and meaningful and faithful today as it might be? Askin’ for a friend…. Come. Celebrate!

Celebrate Ministry

We have two very special events in May celebrating two very special people! On Monday, May 21 from 5-7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, we’ll host a Celebration of Ministry honoring Greg Rumburg. We’ll snack on some food and beverages and share stories about Greg. Following the celebration, an adult post-party gathering will be held on the deck at Edleys Bar-B-Que in Sylvan Park (4500 Murphy Rd).

On Sunday, May 27 from 5–7 p.m., Vine Street will host a Celebration of Ministry honoring Hope Hodnett. A Hot Dog Picnic will be the centerpiece of this event as we reflect on Hope’s 18 years of ministry at Vine Street. An adult BYOB post-party will commence following the picnic at the home of Tim and Linda Crenshaw. We hope you can join us for both events later this month!

Luke 14:12 to Serve Memorial Day

Our monthly commitment to the downtown ministry Luke 14:12 lands this time on Monday, May 28—that’s Memorial Day. How about celebrating this holiday with Nashville neighbors by serving lunch for just a couple of hours? We’ll gather at 11:15 a.m. on the Room in the Inn campus (705 Drexel Street). Jeff Miller coordinates this church ministry; please let him know if you’d like to participate (jeff.miller@img.com).

In the News

• The Official Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 in Fellowship Hall. As always, these meetings are open to members of the church.

• The church office will be closed Monday, May 28 for the Memorial Day holiday.

Maybe Job Needs Better Friends

Please join the adult Christian education class as Dr. James Crenshaw, author of 21 books on the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, leads us in a discussion of Job throughout this month. Everyone gathers Sundays at 9 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Your Support Makes a Difference

There’s still time to share your 2018-19 pledge card, part of our recent stewardship focus. Thank you for this manner of supporting the ministries of Vine Street, along with your gifts of worship, time and talent. Moving forward, church leaders are drafting now a budget for the upcoming church ministry year, starting July 1. It will be presented to the Official Board at its next meeting, Wednesday, May 23. If approved by the Board, a congregational meeting to adopt the proposed budget will be held in June. Please watch for meeting announcements.

What’s Women’s Night Out?

Ladies, how about experiencing a Vine Street group that enjoys a night out on the town, sharing food, beverage and spirited conversation? You can, by coming out for Women’s Night Out! Join the group Thursday, May 24 at 6 p.m. at Coco’s Italian Market (411 51st Avenue N). Kathy Zamata coordinates this gathering (k.zamata@comcast.net).

Vine Street to Host TNT Magic Show

Vine Street will host the TNT Club for a magical party on May 20 at 2 p.m. featuring “Magic Wayne”. This Nashville magician will entertain everyone with a show full of comedy, audience participation and lots of energy. In addition, Wayne will perform balloon twisting, creating everything from adorable animals to neon bicycles. Sound like fun? Come join us!

Volunteers are needed that afternoon to help by arriving a little before 2 p.m. to greet guests to Fellowship Hall. It would also be particularly helpful if you can help cleanup and pack-up from 3:30-4 p.m. TNT is an all-ages ministry event for adults with developmental disabilities and the Vine Street community.
