The Vine Weekly: Feb. 25, 2018

Here's what's happening at Vine Street Christian Church as of Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018.

Tonight: New Chili & Games Event

The Membership Committee invites everyone to Chili & Game Night this evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Bring a batch of your favorite chili recipe to share as you vie for the title, “Chili Champion!” Or, come hungry, ready to survey the lot! With additional tasty food, board games, ping-pong and more, this gathering will help you shake off some of the winter blahs!

Prayer Group Gathering Wednesdays

Folks participating in Wednesday Prayers gather in the Chapel at noon weekly (on Wednesdays, of course). Using a particular pattern, we offer prayers for our congregation and world. With its roots in prayers offered previously by Vine Street elders, everyone is invited to participate. Will you join us from time to time? We follow a printed liturgy for about 20-25 minutes. Contact Julia Keith for more information (worldconvjulia@gmail.com).

Board to Meet

The Official Board will have it’s next meeting Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

A Note of Thanks

Vine Street Friends,

Thank you so much for all that you did for us during the past few weeks. The cards, calls, visits, food, the reception after my mother’s memorial service, the hugs and other expressions of sympathy to us meant more than we can say.  Thank you to those who visited Anne Blackwell and encouraged her to feel a part of this community.  We are so blessed to be surrounded by loving, caring people and we thank you!

Peace,

Pat and Ed Cole and our family

Racism: Let’s Talk

Thomas Kleinert is hosting a new small group featuring the Carolyn B. Helsel title, Anxious to Talk About It: Helping White Christians Talk Faithfully About Racism. The group meets at the church on Tuesdays at 8 a.m. for one hour. Contact Thomas to join the group.

Vine Street at the Movies

Join Vine Street at the Movies on March 7 for the film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Byomkesh Bakshy is the protagonist introduced in the 1930s mystery novels of Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopdhyay. In this 2015 feature, we follow Bakshy’s start as a sleuth as he mixes it up with scoundrels, spies and femme fatales during World War II. (PG-13). Everyone will meet in the Bride’s Room at 7 p.m.

Choir Welcomes New Singers

Like to sing? Come join the Chancel Choir! We welcome new singers at any rehearsal. We rehearse in the Choir room from 6:15-7:15 p.m. on Tuesday nights (except the second Tuesday of the month). Can’t make a long-term commitment? No problem. Seasonal singers are welcome, too. Contact Katie McLaughlin for more information (katie@vinestreet.org).

Tomorrow: Luke 14:12

Volunteers are needed tomorrow as we serve with Luke 14: 12. Can you join us? We will serve lunch with this ministry from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. To sign up, contact Jeff Miller (jeff.miller@img.com). We’ll meet on the Room in the Inn campus, 705 Drexel Street, 37203.

Conversation for a Growing Faith

Our unique adult Christian education class continues next Sunday! As we draw closer to God we also draw closer to one another. May we get to know you? Folks gather at 9 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.

More Than We Can Imagine

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when we look at all the areas of need in God’s world: there is hunger, sickness, and injustice in so many communities. It is easy to feel that we are too small, too insignificant to make a difference, to believe that nothing we can help. We can feel trapped by hopelessness and fear that there is little we can do to truly make an impact.

But there is hope! Better yet: We are that hope! Please consider making a gift to Week of Compassion, the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada.
